French striker Oliver Giroud has dropped the biggest hint yet that a move to the Emirates Stadium could be on the cards after Euro 2012.
The striker is currently training with the French squad preparing for Euro 2012, however this has not hindered speculation of a transfer for the Frenchman. The 25 year old helped Montpellier win the Ligue 1 title last season with 21 goals in the league, and 26 goals in all competitions, which has culminated in the 6ft 3in striker being linked with a move away from France. Giroud reportedly has a £12.8million release clause, which Wenger would see as an ideal price considering Arsenal’s limited transfer budget. Montpellier president Nicollin told French TV show Stade 2: “The only one who can leave [Montpellier], is Olivier Giroud, because he has a [release] clause”, further fuelling speculation of a transfer abroad. Giroud has also been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, Napoli, and most recently Malaga, however the striker has admitted he would jump at the chance to move to Arsenal, “It’s an amazing club with a great French coach, and my bro Lolo [Koscielny] is playing there too.” he said. Giroud is good friends with Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny, and the defender conceded to Telefoot he’d encourage his former Tours team-mate to move to the Emirates, ‘If Olivier calls me I will tell him to come to Arsenal’.
Giroud could be seen as an adequate replacement for Robin van Persie, who’s future is yet to be decided, however Wenger sees Giroud as a complement to the Arsenal captain to bolster the Gunners’ strike force, rather than a replacement.
